/ This week has not been a great week by any standard. Today my mother is being laid to rest, and I am still here in Alabama. It is not because of any antipathy between my family and me; at this point in our lives, the petty rivalries that once consumed us are meaningless and moot. The matriarch of the family has been reunited with her love and has entered her eternal rest.
Death has been busy here, too. The grand-kids’ other grandfather is facing his own mortality , and our oldest grandson is not taking this well at all. I worry about him constantly—he is very special to me. He lives with type 1 diabetes and has to be careful about almost everything, but he is also incredibly smart and gifted, and I want to see him thrive and use those talents. I have chosen to stay here because my family here needs me, too. I am sorry my mom has passed, and I am sorry for the relationship we didn’t have, but none of that is my fault.
I have chosen my immediate family over my siblings, and if I am wrong for that, God Himself will judge me. I don’t need my cousins reminding me of my choices; I am well aware of the decisions I have made. To everyone reaching out, I want to say thank you for your condolences and your prayers. They mean a great deal to me.
